A blog I stumbled upon the other week, via Twitter, had the following invitation:
The idea is that we share truth, and our hopes, dreams and thoughts with our daughters (and/or sons) so we can all benefit from each other’s wisdom. You’ve got wisdom in you and we would all be better for having read it. There are a lot of harmful messages out there for our daughters and this is an opportunity to create a truthful message.
Women have shared their letters on ByeComparison. Please support Brooke, the creator of this blog, with your letter(s) to your sons and/or daughters.
This is the letter to my son:
You my son and I love you more than you will ever know. Whenever you feel down or have a bad day, remember that!
I’m not going to sugarcoat it – life is tough! But if you learn to turn things around in your mind so the challenges aren’t viewed as negative but rather learning experiences, things will be easier.
No matter what, don’t settle. If you have a dream, no matter how unpractical, follow it!! This isn’t to say be irresponsible, it is to say don’t give it up or let it go. Your kindness and compassion and intelligence will all be utilized with whatever dreams you have for your life.
Make all your choices in the light of love; however, understand you won’t always do that. Understand you need to forgive yourself when that happens.
Be completely honest with yourself and others. It will save you a lot of heartache. Even when it’s uncomfortable, it is worthwhile as doing so will save you more problems in the long run. When you need to be honest with someone else, whether you want to or not, do it in kindness. What would Jesus do? Jesus forgave others and welcomed them into his arms, he didn’t mince words. When you need to be honest, do it in love.
Always examine your motive before you make decisions. You can only figure out your true motive when you’re honest with yourself.
- Example #1: Is your motive to attend a specific college because it’s where you think you will get the best education, or because your friends are going there?
- Example #2: Are you helping others because you want recognition or because you want to make a difference?
- Example #3: Are you dating someone for her outer beauty or inner beauty?
Above all, love yourself, accept yourself, and forgive yourself. You will make mistakes, you will hurt others, you will hurt yourself – you are human! I hope your unwise choices teach you something and prevent you from making the same choice again. Remember, Insanity is doing the same things over again and expecting different results. If you keep making the same mistake over and over, you will drive yourself crazy. As difficult as it is, let go of that madness!
Keep in mind that everyone is human! Others will make mistakes and hurt you. I hope will forgive them when this happens. I have learned forgiveness is a journey, not a destination. It takes time to heal and move on.
My favorite two quotes are from two distinctly different yet very similar people.
- Gandhi: Be the change you want to see in the world.
- Mother Teresa: We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.
I leave you with these thoughts to ponder.
